Dental Exams, X-rays & Cleanings
We strongly believe that it is always better to try to prevent dental disease before it starts, which is why we encourage our patients to have routine exams, x-rays, and dental cleanings. This allows our hygienists to determine the health of your gums and supporting bone structures, while also performing a thorough cleaning to remove tartar that develops on your teeth.
Our dentists will also examine your teeth and x-rays to check for cavities and assess your overall dental health, while also completing an oral cancer screening.
Sometimes, active periodontal disease (commonly known as gum disease) will be discovered during your exam. This develops due to an overgrowth of bacteria in your mouth, specifically affecting your gums. When left untreated, it can lead to soreness, bleeding gums, bad breath, and ultimately bone loss around your teeth. This bone loss can eventually cause loosening of your teeth and tooth loss.
We offer treatments for all stages of gum disease, which often includes scaling and root planing (“deep cleaning”) to remove the bacterial buildup from your teeth and gums.
When cavities are detected on your x-rays and exam, we treat them by removing the diseased portion of the tooth and replacing it with a tooth-colored filling. This is a very routine procedure that most patients will go through at some point in their lifetime.
If a tooth is beyond repair due to a large cavity, fracture, or infection, extraction is usually indicated. Dr. McAllister performs routine and surgical extractions in our office, as well as bone grafts and implants to replace your missing tooth/teeth.
