Tooth Extractions in Kalispell, MT
Tooth extractions are routine dental procedures used to remove decayed, damaged, or otherwise problematic teeth. We do everything we can to prevent a dental extraction, but sometimes it is a necessary treatment. There are many different types of extractions, from baby teeth to those pesky wisdom teeth hiding way back there. Regardless the type, we will let you know your options and come up with a treatment plan you are comfortable with, and we will help you through something we know can be a little bit scary.
There are several reasons why you could need a tooth extraction.
We try to prevent the need for removing permanent teeth with routine dental cleanings and dental visits, but sometimes tooth removal is unavoidable. The most common cause of tooth extractions is severe tooth decay and cavities. However, many patients also undergo dental extractions for impacted teeth (teeth that did not grow in all the way—like wisdom teeth). Other causes for extraction include advanced periodontal disease (gum disease), cracked teeth, and teeth that are severely malformed or in bad locations.

Do I need a tooth extraction?
We do everything we can to try to prevent a tooth from being removed, but sometimes it may be the best option. If this situation arises we will make sure we talk to you about all of your options and put together a plan you are comfortable with. Dr. McAllister has advanced training in dental extractions and wisdom tooth removal, so we often present the option of being able to perform the procedure in our office.
What should I expect during my tooth extraction appointment?
People are often nervous about getting a tooth removed. Who would imagine that? We’re joking, of course. We know it can be an intimidating thought, so we do everything we can do to help you through the experience. Dr. McAllister performs most of the surgeries at our dental practice and is skilled at making the experience painless and quick. We perform sedation dentistry and can offer inhalation sedation “laughing gas” or an oral sedative to help make the experience easier for those who need it.
What type of post-treatment care will I need to follow?
Post-operative healing begins before the tooth is removed. Making sure the procedure is done correctly and skillfully are crucial to healing. This is where our experience really shines! We will also give you written instructions to help you heal as quickly as possible, but you will want to avoid certain foods and activities for an instructed amount of time. Antibiotics are not necessary most of the time, but when you are prescribed them it is crucial you take them as instructed. Finally, you may be advised to avoid smoking or drinking through a straw, as doing so may delay the healing process and cause a condition known as ‘dry socket.’
