Brush Properly and Aim for a Comprehensive Clean
When brushing your teeth, the American Dental Association recommends that you place the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and brush back and forth and up and down gently, being sure to give extra attention to the back and front anterior teeth where plaque buildup is common.
Also, don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth as well. This will help remove the bacteria that causes bad breath and give your mouth a more comprehensive clean. Try to cultivate the habit of doing this at least twice a day for at least two minutes each time.
Be Kind to Your Teeth
This tip could also be summed up by saying, live a lifestyle that keeps your teeth healthy. This means avoiding smoking, limit the intake of sodas and alcohol, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, which will help remineralize the surface of your teeth by stimulating saliva and, therefore, keeping away any forms of bad build up or tooth decay.
Keep a Good Brush
The bristles on toothbrushes can wear rather quickly. When you start to notice signs of deterioration and aging, get a new brush because you’re likely not giving your teeth the clean they deserve and need. A good rule of thumb is to get a new brush every three to four months—or every time you go to your semi-annual dental check up.
Floss Regularly and Properly
We know, we know—it’s a tip we’ve all heard over and over again. But, we’ll repeat it because it’s that important. Flossing helps remove the food particles and residue that gets wedged in between teeth, giving your mouth a more holistic clean. Try to floss at least once a day. It’s a habit that will greatly improve your dental hygiene.
See Your Dentist Regularly
We would, of course, be remiss to not add this tip to the list. Regular dental check-ups are essential to ensure good dental health. They can help you identify problems that you may not be able to notice and give your teeth a good cleaning. As a rule, if your gums hurt or bleed when flossing or brushing, or if you are unable to get rid of your bad breath, contact your local dentist. These problems may be indicative of bigger problems.
